Fibromyalgia

Let Our Chiropractors Treat Your Fibromyalgia

Life can be difficult and frustrating with fibromyalgia syndrome or fibro. The condition triggers neck, back, joint, and body pain that is sometimes debilitating. The worst part is there is no cure for fibro, plus doctors have a tough time diagnosing the disorder. Our Manhattan chiropractors at Sorell-Iversen Chiropractic Clinic understands this and wants to help. Instead of relying on medications that temporary treat the symptoms, we use natural chiropractic methods to treat the underlying conditions that provoke widespread pain.

What Causes Fibromyalgia Pain?

Fibro affects about four million adults in the US. The pain starts mysteriously at any of the 18 trigger or tender points in the muscles, then spreads throughout the body. So far, medical researchers are unable to tell what causes the disorder. Scientists suggest it is linked to nervous system imbalances that essentially "turn up the volume" on pain. Women are more likely to develop fibro, but there are other risk factors. They include:

  • Lupus
  • Arthritis
  • Genetics
  • Chronic infection
  • Physical injury or trauma
  • Prolonged emotional distress

Common Fibro Symptoms

The main symptoms are muscle or joint pain and tenderness at various tender spots or points located at the base of the skull, front of the neck, upper back, or lower back. Other trigger points are found at the shoulders, chest, elbows, hips, upper buttocks, and knees. Some patients may experience insomnia, trouble concentrating, fatigue, mood changes, anxiety, depression, or tingling and numbness in hands or feet.

Fibromyalgia Pain Management in Manhattan, KS

We can make a diagnosis if you experience pain or tenderness in at least 11 of the 18 tender points during the trigger point test. An x-ray of your spine may also reveal musculoskeletal conditions that cause pain.

Spinal manipulation and extremity adjustments are effective ways to reduce pain affecting the joints and soft tissue. Your chiropractor will use his hands or an instrument to gently nudge the spine and musculoskeletal structures into alignment. This essentially eases the pressure on the inflamed tissue or compressed nerve and allows healing to take place. Similarly, a shoulder or knee adjustment may reduce pain coming from the tender spots in those areas.

Trigger point therapy targets soft tissue pain. The treatment involves using finger pressure to deactivate the trigger points and ease the pain. As a part of holistic care, we may recommend corrective exercises and massages to reduce stiffness and inflammation. We also encourage patients to manage stress, eat healthy, and increase sleep as part of their comprehensive pain management plan.
